Science in Scouting: OMG! My parang sucks!!

Sigh... sooner or later, you have to sharpen that tool. But then again, why must we sharpen in? Well, the reason are obvious right? A blunt machete won't be good for cutting.

There are quite a number of factors that cause the machete to go blunt, like how frequent you use it and how often do you maintain it. A machete should be treated like your own child, with care and love. Awh... but instead of rubbing it with baby oil, coat it with oil other than baby oil, maybe cooking oil?? It's just to protect it from rusting. Rust makes it fragile, which is a big no-no. I'm not sure whether baby oil works, but anyway, the oil just prevents water vapour and oxygen from turning the cool-looking and shiny metal into horrible-looking orange-reddish colour metal.

Another reason why you don't want your parang sitting at the back of the QM Room to rust is because getting cut by a rusty metal could infect you with the deadly Tetanus disease.

Ok, I know I suck at drawing. This is the best I can do to demonstrate how does the edge of the parang look like when it is sharp and blunt.

Let's insert some science into this. Here's a formula, Pressure=Force/Area. When you want to cut something, you want the edge of the parang to be as sharp as possible, right? When it is sharp, the area of contact between the parang and the object-to-be-cut is small. And from the formula, as the size of the area decreases, the pressure increases. That way, you will exert lots of pressure, just enough to slice something.

But imagine if it is blunt. The parang was abused and unloved for many years. When it is blunt, the area of contact increases, decreasing the pressure exerted on the object. That's why sometimes it's hard to cut something with a blunt cutting tool.

This knowledge can be twisted around so you could apply it in muddy swamps. If you were to be jungle hiking, in a swampy area, and your shoes are always sinking into the mud, you need to decrease the pressure exerted by your shoe on the mud. Obviously, the force cannot be changed, because you can't change your body weight. But you can change the area of the sole of your shoe. Just stick a large piece of cardboard under your shoe, and you shouldn't sink that easily. Ok, this is out of the topic already...

So, the next time Sir says "You! Go sharpen that parang, NOW!", he is right! It may mean dinner for tonight, or push ups until your arms break.

Science in Scouting: Fire!!

It's HOT!!

It's Bright!!

It provides us light!

It's........ FIRE! It's almost impossible to separate fire from camp. It's like a tradition to have a campfire during a camp, no? Be it a big one, or a small one, a campfire is always a marvelous light show.

As we all know, there's this thing called the fire triangle, which just states 3 most important things needed to sustain fire. Come on, you can name them right? Oxygen, Fuel and Heat. Take any of these babies out and your fire will no longer be one.

Anyway, let's say you're trying to start a small fire to barbecue some of your OH-SO-DELICIOUS chicken wings. The first thing you might want to look for out in the jungle are some dry twigs and branches as the fuel for your fire. Then, all you need to do is just pile it up and give it some heat (maybe by friction or from matches/lighters) and BAM! There's your fire!

What's really happening behind the scene is this: A fire starts when there is enough supply of oxygen and given enough amount of heat and is able to sustain its own chain reaction, that is, it must keep producing enough heat to keep burning its fuel and oxygen. The oxygen here acts as the oxidizing agent.

So, I shall stop here for now. Keep those fires burning!!

Science in Scouting: Why tent and wind do not mix?

It's obvious we shouldn't set up a tent in a windy place. Ok, maybe a little wind won't do much harm. But what if the wind picked up speed?

Hmm... let's say you have no other choice but to build a tent in a windy place. How would you orientate it? Would you make the entrance of the tent face the wind, so that when you sleep, you'll have a natural air-conditioner?
(A)

Or would you rather make the wall of the tent face the wind? Hmm...
(B)

In situation (A), the wind is blowing through the tent. As you may know, fast moving air has lower pressure. Imagine if it was a typhoon (maybe you are camping in China at that moment???)

If the support structures are very flimsy, the pressure difference between the outside of the tent and the inside would cause it to collapse into itself. Uh oh, not good if you are having a good night sleep after one whole day of doing push ups.

Ok, maybe you happen to be in Situation B instead. What will happen? Well, that, I'm not so sure, but depending on your tent, the wind should probably go over the tent.

Unless of course, if it were to be a real typhoon, your tent would probably be on the other side of the camping site.

So, anyway, the moral of the story is have a strong tent while camping.

Another word from the erm... so called assistant

Sorry guys, I guess I'm not really that efficient at planning things out. Dang it, I feel so guilty for not helping to contribute to this blog. I have messed up, big time. Gah!!!

See, the computer is always occupied, and everyday I've been going out. And next week, I'm going to Genting again (cousin's family trip), sigh. And I've no time table. So, everything is going haywire.

Yes, I know. I'm just giving excuses. It's no use now. Right, I shouldn't stress myself up.

Anyway, I'm wondering. Why not I bring Scouting and Science together? So like (hopefully) everyweek, I would post up 1 interesting fact about Scouts and Science? Well, at least that's one way of keeping the blog alive.

-Your lousy assistant, Billy
(OK, I better stop blaming myself)

...

Ok, it's already a week. And, as you can see, nothing much changed in the blog, apart from the black background and the weird looking border. I know I'm supposed to finish the layout by this week, but then my sister is always taking the laptop away. What does the laptop got to do with this problem? All the essential tools are in the laptop. I can't do much on my desktop because my desktop is very cacat. Can crash anytime it wants and don't have that OMG-IT'S-SO-COOL digital imaging program. And I still have no idea what to place in this blog. I got some pictures already, but I just dunno where to place them. Sigh...

A word or two from the erm... assistant

Heya, this is Bee Lee, the assistant in the IT department for the Seniors. First of all, I apologise for not bothering to tweak the layout of the blog. Blah me!!! (Bee Lee, you inefficient person!! Booo!!)

Anyway, I'm currently in the middle of changing the layout for this blog. I'm still wondering what should I put up. Hmm... flash animations... anyone good in flash animation? Well, I can make something up with the pirated Macromedia Flash MX 2004 that is sitting in my hard disk right now, collecting dust, but I can't guarantee it will be very nice. More of like a crappy animation. Haha! Just couldn't find a time to look through all the tutorials.

Just give me a week or so. I need to collect pictures, and probably draw some as well, to "jazz" up the blog. Sigh, if only the XHTML code for the layout was easier to understand... Well, you know what they say, nothing comes without a challenge.

Right, so that's all I'm gonna post up today. It's really getting late. Good night!

Tuesday, November 11, 2008

hello junior scouts,
this is your patgua IT head popping in,
since I'm the so-called IT head,
I'm supposed to be only caring about the senior blog,
but I realized the junior blog is also as dead,

so just so you know,
our main website is http://www.boxingkangaroo.tk/
visit it as you wish, it is still not fully functional, so you might still get error pages,
but I'm working on it,

in the mean time,
I'd like some suggestions,
for the blog, the website & the troop (:

and if you're still blur on who and what,
kerwin is your junior IT head,
while Gabriel is the assistant,
please bug them everyday of your life if they're not updating this site constantly,

(trust me, I'm sure they work better under pressure)

hahah.

okay, enough of the lime-light on me,
and also just so you know,
http://www.senior-boxingkangaroo.blogspot.com/
is the official senior weblog. (:

oh and yeah,
have fun in the upcoming holidays and also the annual camp.
please do take tons of pictures for the sake of your junior IT dept.

thankyousoverymuch.

yours in scouting,
melinda.

Monday, November 10, 2008

hello scouts,
we're back!

well, there's tons of updating I need to do,
but right now,
I'm completely clueless on where to start with

no. 1, we at the IT department have been having some major communication issues.
no. 2, our main website is put on hold as my brilliant computer is under attack by the microscopic virus that exists as electric impulses, aka, Trojan Horse in French.

so, since the entire scout troop is still a little dizzy,
the events coming up are still pending,

and that is why,
we,
scouts,
are put on hold for the moment

and as for the IT section,
please for the love of God,
stop asking me about the ugly table unless you wish to donate your table to me.
because, the computer is also under attack by those microscopic virus, and since I have zero budget to work with,
I am completely out of energy to fix that darn thing!

so, solution is :
mathewwoo, who's leaving us soon (no, he's not dying), will donate his computer to us!

TADDAA!

problem solved!

so, next issue,
the ugly table,
you
, yes you, the one staring at the computer screen will donate your table to us!

TADDAA!
problem solved.

next problem,
lack of updates,

solution?
whack your BeeLee who's supposed to maintain this site.

TAADAA.
solved, again.

so you see, now you know why they all elected me as IT head.
it's because I can solve problems so fast!
hhahahahhahaha

I doubt you can do better than me, so shusssh, and do as I say.
so right now, your to-do list is :

1. donate me your table
2. whack BeeLee.

there!

so, come back soon,
and maybe I'll find something to update about,
because unless you find BeeLee, this blog won't be nicely designed.

like I said, whack BeeLee.

yours in scouting,
melinda.
